You need boots that are comfortable (break them in before-hand), provide ankle support and can handle being wet all day, every day. For that reason, we do not recommend expensive backpacking boots or boots that are ‘billed’ as waterproof—waterproof boots don’t do much good when you are standing knee deep in a lake, as you will be when loading a canoe. A type of full leather work boot is often a good choice.
Open-toed footwear does not adequately protect the foot against rocks, sticks and other sharp objects. Look for something that is entirely enclosed, like an old pair of sneakers.
Good quality rain gear is an essential piece of equipment. Ponchos and thin plastic rain gear do not hold up to the rigors of wilderness travel. However, you do not need to spend hundreds of dollars for the latest Gore Tex ® expedition rain wear. Find something in the middle: rain gear that is well made AND affordable.
Meals are made from scratch (no freeze dried items) out of common grocery items and specialized dehydrated goods.
Common menu items include:
Breakfast: granola, pancakes, oatmeal, cinnamon rolls, Grape Nuts.
Lunch: cheese, sausage, raisins, trail mix, rye crisp crackers, peanut butter and gorp.
Dinner: Macaroni and cheese, calzones, pizza, spaghetti.
Groups are mostly limited by their own imaginations!
A big part of what makes Widjiwagan special is the strong friendships that are formed on trail. We encourage you to come to camp ready to make new friends. However, sometimes it is very important for two campers to be together in the same trail group. We will try to honor a friend request for two friends to be together, but not for more than two.
